Following a turnaround season and taking a year off from varsity, Lake Norman Charter’s head football coach is receiving a regional honor.

Bob McKay has been named the High School Coach of the Year by the Charlotte Touchdown Club. After only fielding a JV team in the spring 2021 season, the Knights returned with a varsity squad this fall to go 5-4. It was the team’s first winning record since 2012.

The award honors a high school head football coach from the greater Charlotte region who demonstrates character, integrity, sportsmanship, responsibility and excellence both on and off the field.

Though the school moved up to the 3A classification, the Knights football team went the independent route in McKay’s third season after struggling in the South Fork 2A. Since they didn’t play any 3A teams, they did not qualify for the postseason.

This is McKay’s second stint as LNC coach, first leading the Knights from 2010 to 2013. He will formally accept the award during the annual Bronko Nagurski Trophy Awards Banquet on Dec. 6.
