MOORESVILLE ELECTION: McHenry, Sawyer secure bids; Ward 3 race tight

Primary elections involving Mooresville sand southern Iredell County not deliver many surprises Tuesday, but in many races, there is now clarity related to who faces who in November.

In the U.S. House of Representatives, District 10 incumbent Patrick McHenry won the Republican primary and Pam Genant won the Democratic showdown. The District runs from Iredell southwest to Cleveland and west to Burke.

In the N.C. Senate District 37 Republican primary, Sen. Vickie Sawyer from Mooreville claimed a lopsided victory for her district covering all of Iredell County and northwestern Mecklenburg.

In Iredell County races, Brad Stroud was the top vote-getter in a crowded Republican primary field and will be joined on the GOP side of the November ballot in the race for three county board of commissioner seats by primary runner-up Gene Houpe and Bert Connolly.

Jim Mixon claimed the GOP primary in the Iredell County Clerk of Court race and Renee Holland won the GOP primary for Register of Deeds, and with no Democrats in the race, both have secured terms in office.

In the lone municipal seat primary in the entire Lake Norman region, Kevin Kasel received four more votes than Tommy DeWeese in the three-candidate primary for the Mooresville Town Board Ward 3 seat and Kasel and DeWeese will advance to November for a rematch.
