Mooresville Graded School District superintendent announces retirement

MOORESVILLE – Dr. Stephen Mauney announced Wednesday his plans to retire as Superintendent of the Mooresville Graded School District effective this summer.

Mauney has spent 29 years of service in public education, all with MGSD. He began his career at Mooresville High School in 1993 as a history teacher and eventually worked his way up to be named superintendent in 2016. He was named Regional Superintendent of the Year honor in 2020.

Mauney’s final day in office will be June 30.

“It has been a career filled with joy, frustration, highs, and lows, but overwhelmingly one of purpose and gratitude,” Mauney said in a message to  MGSD staff. “I am truly grateful to MGSD for the opportunities you have presented me to follow the calling that God laid for my path. I am also truly grateful that I work with such a committed group of individuals who love kids and desire to have a positive impact in their lives.”

The district serves approximately 6,100 students, inside three elementary schools, two intermediate schools, one middle school and one high school which includes an alternative learning academy.

He can often be seen cheering on the Blue Devils from the sidelines and stands or going into the classrooms to help students and staff. During his tenure, Mooresville High’s campus transformed, creating a 2,200-seat gymnasium and 1,600-seat auditorium with bonds passed in 2014.

This year data compiler Niche ranked MGSD as the sixth best district in the state, the second best in metro Charlotte behind Union County.

“Dr. Mauney has been a positive influence in our schools as teacher, coach, school administrator, central office administrator and superintendent,” Board Chair Roger Hyatt said. “I value his commitment to students and appreciate his leadership to our district. I wish him all the best as he enters this next chapter in his life.”

The MGSD board will be utilizing the N.C. School Boards Association in their search to name the next superintendent. More information will be posted on the MGSD website as it becomes available.
