Mooresville intersection upgrades on the horizon

MOORESVILLE – Demand exceeds supply for local road improvements, but three projects at Mooresville intersections are locked in on the town’s to-do list.

At a February town board meeting, commissioners approved a town staff request to create a multi-way stop where Lowrance Avenue and Norman Drive meet, and during the board’s retreat on Feb. 11, staff members provided a clearer picture of when two hotly-pursued intersection upgrades on the town’s south side are expected.

Lowrance-Norman

Previous studies of accidents and an agreed-to hedge trimming showed improvements were not needed, but a new study – and the finding that most incidents that did occur could have been prevented by a multi-way stop – led to February’s decision to add more stop signs at the Lowrance Avenue/Norman Drive intersection. A higher volume of traffic, with the roads a popular alternative to under-renovation West Wilson Avenue, was also a factor.

Langtree-N.C. 115

Featuring what Transportation Engineer Camila Weckerly describes as a “trifecta” of intersection headaches – elevation change, misalignment with the opposite road and a railroad crossing – the Langtree Road/N.C. 115 intersection scored high in Charlotte Regional Transportation Planning Organization evaluations of requested projects.

As a result, the town is responsible for only 20 percent of the $5.06 million cost of a comprehensive intersection overhaul, with preliminary work expected to start in January 2023 and construction targeted for July 2024.

Faith-N.C. 115

The Mt. Mourne intersection where north, south, east and Lowe’s corporate campus commutes regularly grind to a halt has been targeted for more lanes in multiple directions for a while. The state has pledged 75 percent of the $3.33 million needed for the work and now – with environmental and encroachment permitting completed – the town is waiting for NCDOT final approval, with “late spring” the targeted starting time.

One response to “Mooresville intersection upgrades on the horizon”

  1. Steve Marsh says:

Why is the 115/Faith intersection not being converted to a traffic circle? There appears to be available property surrounding the intersection.

Langtree road west of 77 has already been rebuilt at taxpayer expense to accommodate the Langtree at the Lake project. If the intersection at 115 is such a hazard, why wasn’t it completed before the two traffic circles?
