CHARLOTTE – N.C. Treasurer Dale Folwell has been traversing the state presenting checks to individuals, businesses and organizations for claiming what’s rightfully theirs through the NCCash program.

“We’ve broken all records, paying out over $73 million in the last fiscal year to more than 125,000 people,” Folwell said Friday at the Charlotte Rugby Club.

Last summer, Folwell and his staff set out on a campaign to raise awareness of the more than $911 million of unclaimed funds in possession of the Department of State Treasurer’s Unclaimed Property Division. The money comes from various sources, with Folwell citing one woman who received more than $200,000 through a life insurance policy no one had ever told her about.

At the Charlotte Rugby Club headquarters in Mountain Island Feb. 11, the organization was presented with $323 that UPD staff identified as unclaimed assets belonging to the club.

A website – nccash.com – has been established to provide an online avenue for submitting claims. The website includes a searchable database consisting of all entities owed money currently held in the state-managed fund.

Addresses in Mecklenburg, Iredell and Lincoln counties are linked to nearly 2 million accounts in the NCCash database, consisting of more than $220 million waiting to be claimed.

“It’s very important for everyone to understand that every state has an unclaimed property division,” Falwell said. “If you’ve ever lived in another state you can search your name there as well, and there’s no cost to file a claim and no cost to get what’s owed to you.”
