New restaurant seeks success on a stick — and more

Honey hot is one of the more popular flavors of wings at Mix Grill.

DENVER — A new Denver restaurant is already attracting large crowds during the afternoon lunch rush.

After being open for only three weeks, a few items on the menu at Mix Grill Kabab & Wings sold out, according to restaurant manager Rich Thompson.

“It’s picking up big time now,” Thompson said. “We’re starting to get more and more people during lunch and dinner hours.”

Thompson, a Concord native who grew up near Charlotte Motor Speedway, spent more than a decade cooking for a major restaurant and hospitality company that provides food to entertainment and sports venues, including Atlanta Motor Speedway, Texas Motor Speedway and Churchill Downs.

“I worked at Levy Restaurants for almost 15 years,” said Thompson. “I traveled around the country with them, because they own 13 different racetracks.”

Like millions of other workers, Thompson was laid off from his job when the COVID-19 pandemic started last year. After an unsuccessful search for positions at countless local restaurants, he found himself working in construction — until he saw Mix Grill was opening near where he lives.

“I noticed they were opening this place up, and I live right down the road,” Thompson said. “I was just waiting on them to get their health inspection, and as soon as they got that, they opened the next day.”

The food

The menu at Mix Grill features kebab platters, with two skewers of savory chicken, beef or lamb paired with rice and a side salad. The restaurant also offers a novel take on the traditional Greek gyro, stuffed with your choice of roasted meat, tomatoes, lettuce, feta cheese and a side of tzatziki sauce.

More than 20 flavors of fried chicken wings, including Buffalo, honey barbecue; and teriyaki, and 10 kinds of sub sandwiches including the already-famous Philly cheesesteak served with onions, mushrooms, peppers and layered with melted provolone cheese are also available.

“We always make our wings crispy, and we order the jumbo wings, ” Thompson said.

Those looking for a healthier option can try the house salad made with lettuce, tomatoes, onions, green peppers, shredded cheese and topped with braised chicken; or the chef salad topped with ham, salami, turkey, cheese and your choice of dressing.

Due to the labor shortage brought on by the pandemic, Thompson said he is looking for kitchen staff, cashiers and delivery drivers to work at the restaurant. Those who are interested can apply in person.
