North Mecklenburg towns begin competition to see who’s the fittest

Celebrating his town’s “Defending Champ” status, Davidson Mayor Rusty Knox addresses the crowd – including Huntersville Mayor Melinda Bales and Cornelius Mayor Woody Washam – at the kickoff ceremonies for the 2022 Mayors’ Fitness Challenge.

The Challenge has begun.

On Sunday at North Mecklenburg Park, representatives of Cornelius, Davidson and Huntersville gathered to begin an eight-week fitness competition between the towns’ residents.

With an introduction to multiple exercise options provided by local businesses and organized groups, the kickoff event included some encouraging teamwork talk from the mayors of all three towns and a brief summary of the process.

In the weeks ahead, residents can register to participate through the parks and recreation departments in their towns. A compilation of town fitness-activity minutes will determine the winner, with Davidson – as Mayor Rusty Knox has emphasized many times in the last few weeks – determined to repeat as champion.

Details and registration information are available at: cornelius.org/pr, huntersville.org/2600parks-recreation and ci.davidson.nc.us/136parksandrecreation.
