Polar Bear bike ride returns to north Mecklenburg in new year

The second Saturday of the new year will mark the 23rd renewal of the annual Polar Bear Ride benefit through the north Mecklenburg and Lake Norman region.

The event, offering half and full metric-century bicycle rides, will be held Jan. 8, with registration beginning at 8:30 a.m and events starting at 10. The start and finish line will be at the Trane/Ingersoll Rand facility, 800 E. Beaty St. in Davidson.

Pre-registration at racesonline.com cost $30. The day-of-race fee is $35. Minors ride free with a parent and ANSI or SNELL approved helmets are required for all riders. Grilled cheese sandwiches, hot soup and hot chocolate will be provided and all registered riders will be eligible for door prizes. For cyclists needing support, vehicles will be deployed along the route with the service provided by The Cycle Path.
