CARY – Led by an MVP performance by Tyler Ramanata, Pine Lake Prep shared the 1A boys individual tennis state title May 15.

The Pride junior took the singles championship with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Sebastian Rodriguez of Research Triangle Academy at the Cary Tennis Park. He defeated Ryan Hill of Raleigh Charter (6-4, 6-1) and Jeremiah Alcantara of Franklin Academy (6-0, 6-0) in the previous two rounds to finish off his undefeated season.

The Pride’s team score also benefited from the deep run from doubles pair Davis Cohen and Parker Dotson. They advanced to the state finals, falling to Raleigh’s Charter’s Griffin Whalen and Ethan Meyerhoffer, 7-6 (8-6), 6-3. In the semifinals, Cohen and Dotson lost the first set 5-7 to another Raleigh Charter duo, but rallied for wins of 6-4 and 6-2.

Community School of Davidson’s Jack Bradford and Gavin Schatz reached the 1A semifinals before losing to the eventual state champs, 6-0, 6-2.

It was the second state championship this spring by Pine Lake coach Paul Ebenhoeh, who also guided the boys soccer team to the 1A title in late March. There was no dual-team state tournament this year, due to pandemic-related changes.
