CARY – Pine Lake Prep’s Andersen Schubert won the 1A singles state championship in dominant fashion.

The sophomore defeated Research Triangle’s Sabrina Grewal 6-4, 6-1 in the final – by far her closest match in the state bracket – at the Cary Tennis Park. In the semifinals, Schubert defeated Kate Fletcher of Thomas Jefferson Academy 6-0, 6-0. Her quarterfinal victory over Franklin Academy’s Helen Brockman also was 6-0, 6-0.

Schubert was 8-0 playing No. 1 singles for the undefeated Pride this year; she was 5-0 in doubles.

She was the third lake-area athlete to win the 1A girls tennis state championship since 2012, joining Community School of Davidson’s Marisa Deininger (2015, ‘16) and Lake Norman Charter’s Hannah Archer (2012).

Both Pine Lake doubles teams lost in the first round of competition.

Blue Devils pair finish 2nd

Mooresville doubles pair Natalie White and Julia Abrams fell in the 4A state title match to familiar foes Oct. 25.

White, a senior, and Abrams, a junior, lost 6-4, 6-3 to Hough’s Oriana Espinoza and Jessica Brannon at Millbrook Exchange Park in Raleigh. In the semifinals, they defeated another pair of Huskies, Valentina and Virginia Jimenez, 6-4, 6-3.

In the quarters, the Blue Devils defeated Cardinal Gibbons’ Karen Galush and Piper Knorr 6-0, 6-3. They opened the championship with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Camille Battle and Courtney Garcia of Apex.
