MOORESVILLE – Lake Norman High’s run as the No. 1 seed ended early when the Wildcats’ soccer team fell 2-1 in overtime to Ardrey Kell in the second round of the 4A playoffs.

After a scoreless regulation, the 17-seed Knights drew first blood with 2:21 remaining in the first of two required extra periods. The deep Lake Norman team responded four minutes into in the second 10-minute extra frame, via the foot of Tristan Torres.

The Knights waited little time to respond, and took advantage of a defensive lapse by the Wildcats. An essentially unguarded shot from the right side gave AK the game-winning goal with 4 minutes left.

Each team had a shot on goal in the first half, with Lake Norman’s chance just before halftime sailing wide. The Knights possessed the ball for most of the last 20 minutes of the second.

Despite its lofty seed, Lake Norman had played tight games all year, but won the highly touted Greater Metro 4 conference. Even in the first round, the Wildcats only beat 32-seed Sun Valley by a 1-0 margin. They finished the season 16-4-3.

Lake Norman was one of three No. 1 seeds out of the West to fall in the second round, with all three involving lake-area schools. Community School of Davidson took down No. 1 Hendersonville in the 2A bracket, while 3A East Lincoln topped regional power Hibriten. Christ the King, 1A’s top team, has won its two games by a combined 15-1.
