DENVER – Unity Presbyterian Church welcomed the Norfolk State University Concert Choir April 19 for a dynamic performance. The nationally recognized choir has performed twice at the White House and is known for the beauty of its choral tone as well as authentic performances of spirituals and other works by African-Americans.

Denver’s Building Bridges Consortium sponsored the event in memory of the late Bishop Franklin Lowery, a longtime pastor at Stanley’s Gold Hill Missionary Baptist Church. Lowery actively inspired and promoted improved racial relations.

The consortium consists of Unity Presbyterian along with five African-American churches in east Lincoln who regularly work together on designated initiatives such as food drives and voter registration. In addition to Gold Hill, these include Ebenezer United Methodist, Rock Hill UMC, St. James UMC, and Tucker’s Grove UMC.

In addition to hosting the performance, Unity recently planted two “peace trees” at each consortium campus with plaques commemorating Building Bridges and commitment to protecting the Earth.
